SIGIR 2023 Measures for Sustainable Conference

SIGIR 2023 is committed to sustainability, and we are working closely with our venue, the Taipei International Convention Center (TICC), and with our suppliers, as well as the Professional Conference Organizer (PCO) company to ensure that we minimize the event’s carbon footprint and mitigate any negative environmental impact that this event may have.

The SIGIR 2023 Organizing Committee will be making a concerted effort to produce only the barest minimum of essential conference materials as part of our wider focus on sustainability, and here are the items we are taking consideration as part of our approach to sustainability commitment:

Transportations

Using online meeting platform to host organizing committee meeting instead face-to-face meeting.
Suggesting the use of public transportation to travel to the conference venue.
Minimize oversea shipment when delivering conference materials.

Food and Beverages

Using local food to avoid longer shipment.
Provide more vegetables portions when serving food.
Using water dispenser at the conference venue instead of bottle water.
Reduce food waste by precise estimation of number of dining guests.
Use reusable utensils instead of disposable tableware.

Accommodations

Choose hotels nearby that are also committed to sustainability.
Suggesting more nearby hotels to avoid longer transportation.

Onsite Decorations and Print Materials

Ensure all the carpets for the exhibition stands are recyclable.
Use digital proceedings instead of paperback proceedings.
Use LED light bulb for decoration purpose.
Use the conference website to provide general information.
All decorations will be produced according to standard measurements to avoid waste production.
Avoid the use of plastic and non-recyclable materials during construction.
Provide name badge recycle box by the registration desk.
Make use of all the digital opportunities that the venue has to offer, such as LED screen.

On the other hand, as part of our commitment to environmental sustainability, we kindly request all attendees to complete a brief online questionnaire that will take approximately 5 to 10 minutes. The purpose of this survey is to record your travel itineraries, daily transportation details, and conference participations. By collecting this information, we aim to calculate the carbon emissions generated during the conference period. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated, as it will enable us to better understand and address our environmental impact. Together, let us strive towards a more sustainable and eco-friendly conference experience.
