The\u00a0<\/span>ACM SIGIR 2018 Doctoral Consortium will provide doctoral students with a unique opportunity to\u00a0<\/span>have substantive interaction with other researchers regarding their proposed dissertation<\/span><\/span> The submitted paper will be the basis for detailed discussions at the Consortium. \n The objectives of the Doctoral Consortium are:<\/span>
\n – To provide a forum where doctoral students can present and discuss their research with\u00a0<\/span>experienced IR researchers: the members of the Doctoral Consortium Program Committee.<\/span><\/span>
\n – To provide students with an opportunity to establish a supportive community, including other\u00a0<\/span>doctoral students at a similar stage of their dissertation research.
\n<\/span><\/span>
\n The Consortium will take place the day before the conference (July 8, 2018), with the format\u00a0<\/span>including: student presentations with plenary discussions, individual meetings with experienced\u00a0<\/span>researchers, and highly interactive networking sessions over lunch and breaks with a special\u00a0<\/span>emphasis on gaining insights regarding career paths after the PhD.
\n<\/span><\/span>
\n Prospective attendees should have written, or be close to completing, a thesis proposal (or\u00a0<\/span>equivalent). It is desirable that students not be so close to completion that the event would have\u00a0<\/span>little impact on their work. Before submitting, students should discuss this criterion with their\u00a0<\/span>advisor or supervisor.
\n<\/span><\/span>
\n Over the years, the Consortium has become increasingly selective. Candidates for the\u00a0<\/span>Consortium will be selected based on the potential of their research for future impact on the field\u00a0<\/span>of information retrieval and the likely benefit to the student of participation in the Consortium. If\u00a0<\/span>necessary, priority will be given to students whose research goes beyond locally available\u00a0<\/span>expertise at their home institution. This selection will be based in part on a written paper, solely\u00a0<\/span>authored by the student. For each selected student, a one page extended abstract of the paper\u00a0<\/span>will be published in the SIGIR 2018 Conference Proceedings. Extended abstracts will be invited\u00a0<\/span>after selection, and should not be submitted with the proposal.
\n<\/span><\/span>
\n Doctoral students who submit to the Consortium are permitted to have previously published on\u00a0<\/span>their research, and are encouraged to submit full, short, or demo papers to SIGIR 2018 and\u00a0<\/span>associated workshops.
\n<\/span><\/span>
\n Priority is given to students chosen to attend the Consortium when travel grants are determined\u00a0<\/span>for the conference. Application details for travel grants will be available on the SIGIR 2018 web\u00a0<\/span>site. In addition, students accepted to the consortium will be eligible to receive a free workshop\u00a0<\/span>registration to attend a workshop of their choosing.
\n<\/span><\/span>
\n Submission Guidelines<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n
\n – Motivation for the proposed research.<\/span>
\n – Background and related work (including key references).<\/span>
\n – Description of proposed research, including main research questions.<\/span>
\n – Research methodology and proposed experiments (where appropriate).<\/span>
\n – Specific research issues for discussion at the Doctoral Consortium.
\n<\/span>
\n In addition, a one page appendix to the paper (placed after the references) should include the\u00a0<\/span>following:<\/span><\/span>
\n – A detailed statement by the student explaining why they want to participate in the SIGIR 2018\u00a0<\/span>Doctoral Consortium at this point in their doctoral studies, and how they hope it will contribute to\u00a0<\/span>the development of the development of their work and potential future career.<\/span><\/span>
\n – A statement by the student\u2019s advisor\/supervisor saying how the student would benefit by\u00a0<\/span>attending the Consortium. Advisors should also specifically state whether the student has written,\u00a0<\/span>or is close to completing, a thesis proposal (or equivalent), and when they expect the student\u00a0<\/span>would defend their dissertation if they progress at a typical rate.<\/span><\/span>

\nFormat Requirements<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
\n name, affiliation and contact details, an abstract of up to 250 words, ACM Computing\u00a0<\/span>Classification System (CCS) categories, and up to 3 keywords describing the topic areas.\u00a0<\/span>Information about categories and keywords can be found in ACM Web pages on the computing\u00a0<\/span>classification system and in the LaTeX and Word templates.
\n<\/span><\/span>
\n – Doctoral Consortium papers will not be published in the SIGIR Conference Proceedings; only\u00a0<\/span>one-page extended abstract invited from selected students will be published.<\/span><\/span>
\n – Doctoral Consortium submissions must be in PDF format and submitted via Easychair SIGIR\u00a0<\/span>2018 doctoral consortium site [\u00a0https:\/\/easychair.org\/conferences\/?conf=sigir2018dc<\/a> ]. It is the\u00a0<\/span>responsibility of the student to ensure that their submissions use no unusual format features and\u00a0<\/span>are printable on a standard printer. Submissions will be reviewed by the members of the Doctoral<\/span><\/span>
