The\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">ACM SIGIR 2018 Doctoral Consortium will provide doctoral students with a unique opportunity to\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">have substantive interaction with other researchers regarding their proposed dissertation<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"> research.<br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"> The objectives of the Doctoral Consortium are:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"> <span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> &#8211; To provide a forum where doctoral students can present and discuss their research with\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">experienced IR researchers: the members of the Doctoral Consortium Program Committee.<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"> <span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> &#8211; To provide students with an opportunity to establish a supportive community, including other\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">doctoral students at a similar stage of their dissertation research.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"> <span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> The Consortium will take place the day before the conference (July 8, 2018), with the format\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">including: student presentations with plenary discussions, individual meetings with experienced\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">researchers, and highly interactive networking sessions over lunch and breaks with a special\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">emphasis on gaining insights regarding career paths after the PhD.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"> <span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> Prospective attendees should have written, or be close to completing, a thesis proposal (or\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">equivalent). It is desirable that students not be so close to completion that the event would have\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">little impact on their work. Before submitting, students should discuss this criterion with their\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">advisor or supervisor.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"> <span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> Over the years, the Consortium has become increasingly selective. Candidates for the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">Consortium will be selected based on the potential of their research for future impact on the field\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">of information retrieval and the likely benefit to the student of participation in the Consortium. If\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">necessary, priority will be given to students whose research goes beyond locally available\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">expertise at their home institution. This selection will be based in part on a written paper, solely\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">authored by the student. For each selected student, a one page extended abstract of the paper\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">will be published in the SIGIR 2018 Conference Proceedings. Extended abstracts will be invited\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">after selection, and should not be submitted with the proposal.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"> <span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> Doctoral students who submit to the Consortium are permitted to have previously published on\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">their research, and are encouraged to submit full, short, or demo papers to SIGIR 2018 and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">associated workshops.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"> <span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> Priority is given to students chosen to attend the Consortium when travel grants are determined\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">for the conference. Application details for travel grants will be available on the SIGIR 2018 web\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">site. In addition, students accepted to the consortium will be eligible to receive a free workshop\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">registration to attend a workshop of their choosing.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"> <strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Submission Guidelines<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">The submitted paper will be the basis for detailed discussions at the Consortium. To get the most\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">out of the discussion, it should include:<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"> &#8211; Motivation for the proposed research.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"> &#8211; Background and related work (including key references).<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"> &#8211; Description of proposed research, including main research questions.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"> &#8211; Research methodology and proposed experiments (where appropriate).<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"> &#8211; Specific research issues for discussion at the Doctoral Consortium.<br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">In addition, a one page appendix to the paper (placed after the references) should include the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">following:<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"> <span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> &#8211; A detailed statement by the student explaining why they want to participate in the SIGIR 2018\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">Doctoral Consortium at this point in their doctoral studies, and how they hope it will contribute to\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">the development of the development of their work and potential future career.<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"> <span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> &#8211; A statement by the student\u2019s advisor\/supervisor saying how the student would benefit by\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">attending the Consortium. Advisors should also specifically state whether the student has written,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">or is close to completing, a thesis proposal (or equivalent), and when they expect the student\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">would defend their dissertation if they progress at a typical rate.<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Format Requirements<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">&#8211; Submissions must be written in English and submitted in the 2017 ACM Master Article Template\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">(for LaTeX, use the \u201csigconf\u201d option) [ <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acm.org\/publications\/proceedings-template\">https:\/\/www.acm.org\/publications\/proceedings-template<\/a> ].\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">The paper should be no more than 5 pages in length including all figures and references, but not\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">including the one page appendix. The first page must contain the title of the paper, full author<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"> <span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> name, affiliation and contact details, an abstract of up to 250 words, ACM Computing\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">Classification System (CCS) categories, and up to 3 keywords describing the topic areas.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">Information about categories and keywords can be found in ACM Web pages on the computing\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">classification system and in the LaTeX and Word templates.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"> <span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> &#8211; Doctoral Consortium papers will not be published in the SIGIR Conference Proceedings; only\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">one-page extended abstract invited from selected students will be published.<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"> <span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"> &#8211; Doctoral Consortium submissions must be in PDF format and submitted via Easychair SIGIR\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">2018 doctoral consortium site [\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/easychair.org\/conferences\/?conf=sigir2018dc\">https:\/\/easychair.org\/conferences\/?conf=sigir2018dc<\/a> ].
